A dress!

Dress detail
Finally, after much talk, and more buying of fabric and patterns than I let on here, I have actually sewn up a woolen winter dress- just in time for spring!
Dress front
It is McCall's M5464, made up in a wool/acrylic/polyester mix (not even pure wool, after all that!). I saw the fabric in the King's Fabric sale in Oxford for very cheap, having just seen a beautiful olive check dress on a woman in a restaurant. Irresistible, despite the low wool content!
The dress does have the sleeves I've been coveting, and has already done plenty of work-dress duty.
Dress with cup
I wore it to a Bluestockings meet up, and mentioned I felt it was a little plain. Lara suggested a giant bow- so I had a bit of an experiment. I may have got a little carried away...

Um, suggestions?

A belt in the same material, but a little stiff. You can wear it low slung like the bow in the second piccie, or slightly higher like the bow in the first piccie! :)

Love the dress.

Great dress! I like the shoulder bow best.

Beautiful dress! I'm awed by your sewing skills. I'd suggest a belt, either as Kai suggested, or a wide light brown leather belt.

I like plain, it allows the fabric and the shape take center stage.

And your hair looks cute at that length.

lovely dress, looks great on you.
what about a narrow golden belt?

oh i really like the dress, and know just what you mean about winter dresses ready for spring (in my case it was winter gloves ready for summer, last year), and also about the wool content (interesting weaves always seem to be surprisingly unwoolly!). I think that the bow is definately needed for a focal point, I prefer the bow placed at the side, either on the shoulder or the hip, because it gives a much more youthful and modern feel to the style. the bow at the shoulder is probably more conventional, and would most likely fit better with other clothes (i.e. cardigans wouldn't be distorted by being funny and lumpy or riding above).

ta-ra!

This dress is fab-- I wish I could sew like that! It seems very Roland Mouret to me, but I can't pick where the bow should go because I like it everywhere.

shoulder bow I think! for fun and middle bow at the chest for work or serious occassions!

The dress is great - I think you've done a fantastic job.....

I like the bow at the centre, both at the waist and the neck......

Either way - you should be proud!

You are absolutely right about sleeves & dresses. Yours are super - just the right length.

I think it's lovely the way it is. :) But if you want something maybe a belt in the same fabric like kai suggested?

I like the bow on your hip (pic #2) - it's wonderful and so very 80's!

wow... that is a big bow.
I was also going to suggest a belt, but the bow on the shoulder does look nice! Use all the options.... that way you won't get bored!

Wow! That dress is gorgeous! I think it is lovely plain but even more lovely with the bow on the hip.

oooh, that's lovely. I have to put mine in for the shoulder bow. although a tasty little belt would look wonderful too. Love how the plaid matches up perfectly.

That dress is so great!...but I still think your wonderwoman sweater takes the cake for awesomeness.

Love the dress! It looks great alone, but adding a belt would give you a slightly different look, and without a belt, adding a chunky necklace would also mix it up.

Love the dress and the bow centred at the waist. Gives the dress more curves and a bit of French chic!
