My Grandfather has a Japonica quince in the garden, which produces an annual modest glut of fruit.
Since the un-processed fruit is bitter and inedible, and the blossom very pretty, most people grow the plant as a flowering shrub, and let the fruit rot.
However, if you can be bothered, it does make a delicious, if laborious, jam. So of course, I jammed!
This year the tree excelled itself- rather than the usual, manageable, 3kg or so, it came up with 6kg of fruit (and that was discarding ruthlessly, instead of saving the savable!)
This took 12 litre of water to boil up
Six hours to push through a sieve for the pulp
and 6kg of preserving sugar (lurking behind the bowl...)
It took 28 jars to pot it up (I had to resort to buying all of the tumblers in the local charity shop!)
But it's yummy!

Ohhh, I'm using all my super powers to imagine what it tastes like.
I like it!
Orange mixed with melon I think....yumm.
Can you put me down for a jar? I'll trade you some damson gin jam...

You are a glutton for punishment! Although I am sure it is worth it. You are also an absolute saviour, because I have been convinced that the fruit on the 2 bushes I have in my garden are quince, they are just so much smaller than the ones you see in the shops, but now I know that they are exactly that, so thank you!
really like the shot of the chopped quince in the bucket. All those secret seed chambers!
Wow!
and each step looks very photogenic as well! what a beautiful fruit, it's funny that it changes color so drastically from beginning to end
Holy hell that took a long time! And that's a lot of jam. I'm sure it's worth it though :) Enjoy!
btw my fabric from reprodepot should be here today although I had a set-back with the blocking. grr.
Beautiful pictures!
omg - it's like jamorama!
ooo... that looks SO GOOD! I love making jam!
how pretty too! I love taking things I find and making them into.....[insert end of sentence here]
hehe. :)
I'm wholly impressed with your skills. I've never made jam but it looks delicious. :)
What a gorgeous color it turned out to be. Congrats on your jam bounty!
Sorry! I know this is an old post but I'm a relatively new reader. I've just made jam for the first time myself and found it quite an experience. Your jam looks lovely, I hope it tasted as good as it looks :)
